MLB betting: baseball moneyline, run line and totals
With a game almost every day from spring to autumn, baseball rewards patience and punishes overconfidence.
Updated October 4, 2026
MLB betting odds are built around the moneyline, because baseball has no draw and favourites rarely win more than two games in three. That keeps prices in a tight band and makes the run line and the total the places where most of the thinking happens. Here is how Major League Baseball works for a bettor.
Season format
Thirty teams play 162 games each from late March or early April to the end of September, mostly in three- or four-game series. Twelve teams reach the postseason, which runs through wild card series, division series and league championship series to the World Series in October. Extra innings settle tied games.
Baseball markets
- Moneyline: the winner, extra innings included. A favourite at 1.65 implies 60.6 %; even a strong team loses plenty of games.
- Run line: the baseball handicap, almost always ±1.5 runs. The favourite at -1.5 must win by two or more, which is why its price is much longer than its moneyline.
- Totals: combined runs, commonly around 7.5 to 9.5 depending on the pitchers and the ballpark.
What really moves MLB odds
Starting pitchers come first. A team's price can swing sharply between its ace and its fifth starter, and a late scratch changes the game. Ballparks come second: some parks are hitter-friendly because of altitude, short fences or wind patterns, and they push totals up. Bullpen fatigue after a run of extra-inning games and day games after night games also matter over a long season.
How Nocturn Sport prices baseball
Baseball runs on our goals-type model, adapted to runs. Each team has attack and defence ratings learnt from past results, plus home advantage. Because run scoring is more spread out than goals in football (a quiet 2-1 one night, a 10-7 slugfest the next), we use a negative binomial distribution, which is wider than Poisson. From the full score grid come the moneyline, the run line and the totals. The ratings are team-level, so a surprise change of starting pitcher is something you can weigh yourself before you bet.

Worked example: a total of 8.5 with the over at 1.95 implies 51.3 %. In a cold, windless night in a pitcher's park with two strong starters, you might rate it lower and look at the under.
