Basketball betting: spreads, totals and the moneyline

How basketball odds work, from the NBA point spread to the game total, and how our ratings set them.

Updated October 4, 2026

Basketball is a points game played at high tempo, and that shapes the betting. With around 200 points scored in a typical NBA game, one bad quarter rarely decides a match, so the better team wins more often than in football. That's why basketball betting is dominated by the point spread and the total rather than the plain winner. Our basketball odds come from an in-house points model; you can bet them at nocturnsport.com.

Basketball betting markets

Moneyline (winner, overtime included)

Just pick who wins. Basketball can't end level, so overtime is included in our winner market and there are only two outcomes. A heavy NBA favourite might be 1.20, the underdog 4.50.

Point spread (handicap)

The spread evens the contest. If the Celtics are −6.5 against the Hornets, a bet on Boston wins only if they win by 7 or more; a Charlotte +6.5 bet wins if they win outright or lose by 6 or fewer. Both sides of the main spread are usually priced close to evens, around 1.90.

Total points (over/under)

You bet on the combined score. With a line of 224.5, a 115-112 game (227) is over; 108-110 (218) is under. Pace — how many possessions each team uses — drives totals more than shooting talent does.

How we price basketball

Each team has an offensive and a defensive rating in points, plus the home advantage specific to its league. Combining them gives two figures: the expected margin (say, home by 5.5) and the expected total (say, 221). We treat both as normal distributions — the bell curve describes basketball scores well because there are so many scoring events.

From the margin distribution we get the winner probability, overtime included, and the price of the main spread. From the total distribution we get the main over/under. Measured on past matches, the model was fitted on 8,665 games and tested on 1,712 unseen ones, beating a naive base-rate forecast. The detail is in how we price odds.

Leagues and season rhythm

The NBA regular season runs from late October to mid-April — 82 games per team — followed by the play-in and best-of-seven playoffs into June. Europe's top club competition and national leagues run on a similar autumn-to-spring calendar, with fewer games and slower pace, so totals are typically lower. Summer brings international tournaments.

Tips specific to basketball

  • Back-to-backs. NBA teams playing the second night in a row often rest stars and defend worse; check the schedule before taking a short favourite.
  • Late scratches. One star missing can shift a spread by several points. Our markets close 1 minute before tip-off, so wait for the injury report if you can.
  • Key numbers matter less than in the NFL. Basketball margins spread out smoothly, so the difference between −5.5 and −6.5 is small but real.
  • Garbage time. Blowouts produce soft late points that can push an under over the line.

Spreads behave like handicaps in football; our markets guide compares them side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Does the basketball moneyline include overtime?

Yes. Our winner market settles on the final result including any overtime.

What does −6.5 mean in basketball betting?

The team must win by 7 points or more for the bet to win. The half point means there is no push.

Why are basketball totals so high?

Because basketball has many possessions and high scoring rates; an NBA total around 220–235 points is normal.
