Football betting markets explained
Match result (1X2)
The classic three-way bet: 1 is the home win, X the draw, 2 the away win, all settled on the 90 minutes plus stoppage time — extra time and penalties don't count. Because the draw is a real outcome (roughly one league match in four ends level), a favourite at 1.80 in football is a much weaker certainty than a favourite at 1.80 in tennis.
Double chance and draw no bet
Double chance covers two outcomes at once: 1X, X2 or 12. Draw no bet refunds your stake if the game is drawn. Both trade price for safety; if a home side is 2.00 to win, draw no bet might sit around 1.45.
Over/under goals
We price totals at 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 goals. Over 2.5 wins with three goals or more. A half-goal line can't be a push, which is why these lines are the most popular.
Both teams to score (BTTS)
Yes if each side finds the net at least once, regardless of the result. A 1-1 and a 3-2 both win a BTTS Yes bet; a 4-0 loses it.
Handicaps and correct score
A handicap gives one side a head start. Backing a favourite at −1 means they must win by two or more for a clean win. Asian handicaps add quarter and half lines that remove the draw or split the stake — see our Asian handicap guide. Correct score asks for the exact final scoreline, so the odds are long: a 1-0 might sit around 7.00.
How our football odds are calculated
Every team carries an attack rating and a defence rating, learnt from thousands of past results and adjusted for home advantage. Put Arsenal's attack against a mid-table defence and you get an expected goals figure for each side — say 1.9 for the hosts and 0.9 for the visitors.
Those two numbers feed a Poisson distribution, which gives the probability of every scoreline from 0-0 upwards. Pure Poisson underrates low draws, so we apply a Dixon-Coles style correction to scores like 0-0 and 1-1. From that full score grid we read off the 1X2, all three totals, BTTS and the handicaps, so every market on a match agrees with the others.
The model was fitted on 10,783 past matches and tested on 1,973 later matches it had never seen; on that test it beat a naive base-rate forecast. Our pricing guide goes deeper.
Leagues and the football calendar
The European season runs from August to May, with international breaks in September, October, November and March that thin the fixture list. Midweek rounds and Champions League nights squeeze rest, which is when squad rotation hits prices. Follow the competitions in our league pages: Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the Champions League.
Football betting tips that actually help
- Check team news late. A missing first-choice striker can knock 0.2–0.3 off a side's expected goals. Our markets stay open until 1 minute before kick-off, so you can bet after line-ups drop.
- Respect the draw. Two evenly matched sides at 2.60 each look tempting, but the draw is often 30 % likely in such games.
- Don't stack short favourites. Five teams at 1.30 in an acca multiply to 3.71, yet the chance all five win is often below a third.
- Think in goals, not reputations. Low-scoring leagues and cagey derbies make under 2.5 more common than the names suggest.
Frequently asked questions
Does 1X2 include extra time?
No. Football markets settle on regular time plus stoppage time; extra time and penalty shoot-outs are excluded.
What does BTTS mean in football betting?
Both teams to score: the bet wins if each team scores at least one goal during the match.
Can I combine football bets in an accumulator?
Yes, up to 10 selections with one per match. Two markets from the same match can't go in the same slip.
