NBA betting: how to read basketball spreads and totals
Eighty-two games, travel across four time zones and a long playoff run make the NBA a schedule-driven betting league.
Updated October 5, 2026
NBA betting odds are mostly about numbers that move in small steps: a spread of -5.5 or -6.5, a total of 224.5 or 226.5. Each point matters, and in the NBA the biggest swings come not from form but from who actually plays tonight. This guide explains the season, the markets and the way our points model works.
The NBA season in brief
Thirty teams in two conferences play 82 regular-season games from late October to mid-April. Seeds 7 to 10 in each conference go through the play-in tournament, then 16 teams contest four best-of-seven playoff rounds up to the Finals in June. An in-season cup adds a knockout flavour in November and December.
NBA markets explained
| Market | How it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Who wins the game, overtime included | Favourite at 1.45 = 69 % implied |
| Point spread | The favourite must win by more than the line | -6.5: a seven-point win covers, six does not |
| Total points | Combined score over or under the line | Over 226.5 needs 227 points or more |
Because no NBA game can end level, the moneyline has only two outcomes. Overtime counts for the winner, the spread and the total, which is worth remembering when you back an under in a close game: five extra minutes add plenty of points.
What moves NBA odds
- Back-to-backs: the second night of consecutive games, often with travel in between, costs a team legs and shooting accuracy.
- Rest decisions: star players are sometimes held out for rest or minor knocks, and the news can come late.
- Pace: two fast teams push the total up; a slow, defensive matchup pulls it down.
- Playoff adjustments: in a best-of-seven series, coaches tweak game plans from game to game and rotations shorten.
How Nocturn Sport prices an NBA game
Our basketball model rates each team's attack and defence in points per game and adds the league's home advantage. That gives an expected margin and an expected total. Margin and total each follow a normal distribution, so we can compute the probability of every spread and total line, and the winner probability with overtime included. Measured on past matches, the basketball model was fitted on 8,665 games and tested on 1,712 later games it had never seen, where it beat a naive base-rate forecast.
Our NBA games currently open for betting appear in this live table:
Nothing is open in this section right now — the full list of matches and prices is on nocturnsport.com. All odds on nocturnsport.com
Worked example: if our expected margin is 7 points and you see a -6.5 spread, the favourite covers whenever it wins by 7 or more, which sits just above the 50 % mark in a normal curve centred on 7. That is why lines so close to the expected margin are priced near even money. More in our basketball betting guide and how we price odds; prices on nocturnsport.com.
Frequently asked questions
Does overtime count in NBA bets?
Yes, for the winner, the spread and the total on our sportsbook, overtime is included.
Why does an NBA line move just before tip-off?
Injury reports and rest decisions are often confirmed close to the start. A missing star changes the expected margin by several points. Our markets close one minute before tip-off.
