Wrestling betting guide: freestyle and Greco-Roman

Olympic-style wrestling is one of the oldest combat sports, and it is decided by points, pins and positional control.

Updated October 5, 2026

Wrestling betting usually concerns Olympic-style wrestling: freestyle, where attacks on the legs are allowed, and Greco-Roman, where holds below the waist are forbidden. Bouts are two periods of three minutes, and the big events are the Olympic Games, the World Championships and continental championships, plus the US college season.

A wrestler wins a bout in three ways:

  • Fall (pin): both of the opponent's shoulders held to the mat;
  • Technical superiority: building a large points lead, which stops the bout early;
  • Decision on points after six minutes.

The markets follow: bout winner, method of victory, total points and tournament medal or outright bets. In a single-elimination bracket with repechage, the draw of the bracket can make a medal path much easier or harder.

What matters: weight cut (weigh-ins are on the morning of competition, so a hard cut costs energy), style (a leg attacker against a strong defender), passivity rules that award points to the more active wrestler, and experience at major championships.

Worked example: a wrestler at 1.30 implies 76.9 %. If his wins come mostly by technical superiority, "win by technical superiority" offers a longer price for the same read.
